Will Adding RAM Increase Computer Speed?

Article by J James

Have you heard the old saying that our grandparents studied the 3 R’s…. Reading, Riting, and Rithmatic? OK, I’m sure it was even corny back then… But today, at least in computer maintenance, it is the 2 R’s. Registry and RAM. What is RAM and how can it increase computer speed?

First, see where your computer stacks up right now. Go to your control panel and find System or System Information. There you will see some general information on your computer such as Model, Processor, etc. The RAM will be listed as Memory or maybe SDRAM. From XP forward computers need at least 1 gigabyte but really 2 gb is much better even in older models. You can’t have too much and it is not expensive.

But what is it? Random Access Memory is your computer’s working memory. It is a non-moving stick or small circuit board that is attached to the Mother Board of the PC by being plugged in. This is in contrast to the main drive storage disc that is just that, a “disc” similar to a DVD that moves when being accessed.

There is almost always room or slots for additional RAM to plug-in to the mother board and add to its capacity. On a desktop this is pretty easy by opening the side of the case. A laptop is a little more difficult and you should be careful about breaking warranty seals on new notebooks.

To add more RAM I would suggest taking in your present stick or circuit board to a local PC shop. There are different types and speeds and you need to match it exactly. The pictures here are pretty accurate as to the RAM and the mother board with the slots where the RAM is plugged in. You can remove it by taking off the case side panel and pulling it with your fingers. Don’t use pliers or anything that will crimp or scratch it. (and of course have the PC off and unplugged!)

How To Speed Up My Computer? (5 easy tips)

Article by Hussmir

Having a slow PC can be a big inconvenience today. When your computer speed is half of what it used to be, and your computer performance is below average, it feels like the world has come to an end – not to mention the fact that your operating system seems to run in slow motion, and the peak performance you need isn’t attained. The question on your mind is, “How can I speed up my computer?” Continue reading this article, as it provides you with various tips and tricks that will boost your PC speed.

Let’s start with the beginning. When you shut down your computer, an error message might appear on your screen. This should not be overlooked, as it provides you with information about the program or programs that don’t run properly. Since Windows Vista and Windows XP are the operating systems used by most users, we’ll focus on them in this article.

Now, you might think that computer optimization is difficult. It’s not! Really, calling technical support is not needed as you can fix your slow computer by yourself at home in no time! Even if your computer runs dramatically slow, you can tweak its computer performance! So, here’s what you need to know:

If a computer using a Windows operating system runs slow, don’t blame Microsoft. It’s true that no Windows is perfect, and XP and Vista are not an exception. However, it’s easy to fix the problems. First of all, Windows has a great flaw – its registry system. Basically, when your computer is overcrowded with programs – including trials that automatically install virus spyware, junk files, and unused startup programs – registry errors start to show up. Basically, all those programs cram up RAM memory, and this leads to slow processes, which leads to a slow system performance. Don’t worry, running a registry cleaner program will help you free up some RAM, and you’ll get improved performance and a faster computer.

Now, another thing you should be aware of, is that an Internet connection enabled means that your computer might have some adware and spyware programs on it – these usually come with free trials. The greater the number of programs you installed on your Windows OS, the slower things will move, as Windows speed is directly proportional with the number of running programs.

To make a long story short, here’s what you need to do if you want to have a faster PC:

Tip #1 Defrag
One of the first things you should do if you want to speed up your computer is to defrag. This is something you can easily do and a wizard on your computer will help you defrag. You might want to do it overnight, however, because it can take a long time.
Go to start>all programs>accessories> system tools and there should be a disk defragmenter. If not go to start>my computer> right click drive (c:) or disk drive > click properties > click the tools tab then click defragment now.

Tip #2 Spyware Remover
Download a good spyware remover. Most computers have a lot of spyware running in the background, stealing information and slowing down your computer. Remove it frequently if possible.
Hussmir recommends Spybot – Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware by Lavasoft

Tip #3 Empty Temp Internet Files
Most Internet browsers save your last visited web pages for up to 30 days. If you don’t want all of those pages saved then change the days to one or two, or none, whatever meets your needs.
To do this on Internet Explorer go to Tools>internet options> and where it says browsing history under the general tab click delete and make sure temporary internet files is selected.
If you don’t have or use internet explorer then go to start>control panel>network and internet connections>internet options if your in classic view then internet options should already be there.

Tip #4 Antivirus Programs
Make sure you have a good anti-virus program and use it frequently. If you are deleting virus and preventing them from feeding on your computer then you will have a faster computer as well.
Good ones include Norton, AVG and kaspersky however there are many more. If you want a free anti-virus (they may not give you full protection as the ones you buy) you can try AVG free or Avast free antivirus.

Tip #5 Registry Cleaners
Download a registry cleaner program that will get rid of the uninstalled programs that occupy registry space for nothing and also trial programs that expired and slow down your PC.
Hussmir recommends COMODO system cleaner however there are many free system clears make sure you download a legitimate one. Some other ones include CCleaner, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner and EasyCleaner.

How to Speed Up My Computer Quickly and Easily!

Article by Kelly Purden

Who can tell me how to speed up my computer? If that’s your perennial question then you may really be having bad computing days. Yes, it could be quite frustrating to be waiting for your computer to reboot or begin an application when you have a deadline to beat. It just drains you off your patience.

It will go on that way and sometimes the worst thing that can happen is for your computer to fail you totally by hanging or shutting down without much of a warning. You would think violently tapping on the keyboard or screaming at your screen will do the trick, but they won’t.

Waiting for the computer to finish boot up is one thing. Waiting for the computer to respond to tasks at hand is another. The Windows system is bound to slow down like this over time because of so many things. It is best to resolve these reasons so that you won’t be prompted to ask, “How to speed up my computer?” Paying attention to the reasons will do you good and will let you forget that you want to throw that thing out the window.

-Build up of mess in the Registry

When your computer boots up, it refers to the registry to tell it what things it needs to bring out from memory in terms of what to display or launch. The registry is this cache that accepts all things related to tasks performed based on the user’s inputs. In time, this registry will have so much information that it will become too messy. Since the computer relies on this for start-up too, you have one reason here why you have to wait for a long time before your computer is ready.

Registry cleaners can help solve this. Source out one from the Internet; scan your machine; and start a regular clean-up job to maintain your computer. That will be one answer to your search string, “how to speed up my computer.”

-Jam-packed Hard Drive

When your hard drive is fully loaded with files, it will also take some time for the computer to fetch the necessary details or information of a particular task. You see, the hard drive assigns places for data to reside in when you save something. These bits of information have their own addresses in the drive and they are in sort of an order. In time, as the files start to build up, there will be fragments and vacant slots between filled-up location.

This causes related chains to get scattered. So, when you start to access these to launch a particular application, it may take some time for the computer to locate all details completely because of the disarray. This can be solved by defragmentation, which should be done once every two weeks.

It is also best to keep at least 500Mb of the hard drive free or unused. That will greatly contribute to answer questions on “how to speed up my computer.”

You should regularly maintain your computer to make it clutter-free. The more messed up your registry and your hard drive are, the more time it will take for the computer to respond to your inputs.

How To Increase Internet Speed In XP

Article by R.J.Dunne

The XP operating system is still in widespread use today and struggles just as much as Vista or Windows 7 to manage the large volumes of web data they need to process. This article shows how to increase internet speed in XP without resorting to purchasing applications or editing the registry.

Start out by first getting a baseline status of how your connection is performing. Open the speedtest.net site and run their test to find the ping rate and upload/download speeds for your connection. You should run the test after each change to see if the results improve.

Run anti-virus and anti-malware/adware scan on your computer to make sure there are none present that could slow your PC speed.

Next use the Windows Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter to optimise your computer (XP has these in the properties popup for your hard drive). These types of computer maintenance and repair activities will help increase PC speed, disk access times and file caching which all goes to benefit how the browser and networking applications run.

Open your browser of choice and disable as many add-ons as you can happily do without. These add-ons can use a lot of your bandwidth and many run with every page you visit. Be picky about which ones stay enabled.

Knowing how to increase internet speed in XP, for IE users, requires a lot of Windows registry editing to manually modify network/TCP settings. In reality, you are better off leaving the registry alone or using a commercial tool to do this. The one recommended manual tweak you can do is to disable multimedia settings (under tools/ advanced) relating to audio, video and cleartype fonts.

In comparison, Firefox users can increase internet speed in XP quite simply using the Fasterfox add-on. The changes it makes can be manually made using the about:config page but doing so requires more in-depth knowledge to correctly reset some parameters.

How to Can I Speed Up my Computer?

Article by John Devine

“How can I speed up my computer?” is often asked to me. Whether you do something to your computer, or not, you will always end up having a slow running computer at some stage. One short year after I got my laptop, I done a registry scan of the whole system and found over 1,200 invalid registry errors!

When the question, “How can I speed up my computer?” came to my head first, I quickly discovered that these errors happen because of an unhealthy PC registry. The cause of this was mainly used process files that were left behind after I either Installed or uninstalled a program. Needless to say the degradation in performance was Dire.

As luck would have it, I also got a string of viruses at the time. But with some good anti-virus software, they got swiftly deleted. However, the damaged caused by the virus still remained. In the form of invalid registry entries.

The best and quickest way you can answer the “How can I speed up my Computer?” question, is by buying a good registry cleaner. These nifty little computer applications will clean up old, invalid registry entries and will heal any damage that viruses and other malicious programs may have caused. It will also point process files in the correct direction when they have displaced by the malware or by another program that you may have moved to a different folder.

While Registry cleaners do eliminate a lot of errors from your slow running computer, more still needs to be done with windows to tweak if effectively for optimal performance.

Which is why I don’t choose a registry cleaner for my PC maintenance and error fixing needs. I get a complete PC optimization tool that does everything.

However common knowledge of computers is also a must even if the software does all the hard work. I am going to give you this knowledge for free. To finally help you answer that question “How can I speed up my computer?”
